A Spring of Living Water

For many years people who didn’t live near a river would rely on their water supply from a well dug into the ground or a spring that would issue from the hill-side. The trouble with wells and springs is that they often dry up if there has been no rain.

Jesus begins a conversation with the woman at the well, where he was resting in the heat of the day, by asking for a drink of water.

He goes on to talk about water as a metaphor for life: 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.' John 4:13-14

Everything Jesus did or said is life-enhancing, life-affirming. "I have come to give life, life in all its abundance." What better picture of this outpoured life than a fountain or spring of ever replenishing water. There is something miraculous about a spring of water emerging from the hill-side, or a fountain of water defying gravity. Jesus wants our lives to have something of the miraculous about them, to be full of wonder and invigorating joy. For that to happen we depend on him. Later in John’s gospel he says "Whoever believes in me... rivers of living water will flow from within them." When we believe in him, his life will flow though us and out of us to bless others. We become the fountain through which the water can freely flow. What an amazing hought. What an extraordinary privilege. Another way of describing this living water that can flow through us is the holy spirit.

So like the woman at the well we simply have to trust Jesus, take him at his word, and make sure that the spring does not become blocked by a selfish desire to keep hold of things. As Oswald Chambers wrote: "If we believe in Jesus, it is not what we gain, but what he pours through us that counts."

The Spring was so named because we wanted it to be a place though which God’s love flows, and is poured out in the service of this community. The Spring has always stayed connected to the source of life and love though regular prayer and a commitment to love our neighbour through hospitality and welcome. It is a place where people can find a warm smile, friendly companionship, good food, clean clothes and affordable things. It has flourished by God’s grace and through the dedication of many faithful people who have worked hard to keep the Spring of living water flowing. And as God has blessed this work, so we are able to give to the work of other charities, especially Christians against Poverty, which meets the needs of those struggling with debt or with other life issues. Oswald Chambers writes:" Spiritually we cannot measure our life by success, but only be what God pours through us, and we cannot measure that at all"

As we celebrate 20 years of The Spring we are grateful for God’s generous blessing, which we pray that he will continue to pour out through us in the years to come.
