Superheroes

The latest film craze is for films of Superheroes and heroines; Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers, X-Men, Wonder Woman. With the wonders of Computer Generated Imagery, ordinary actors can become extraordinary saviours of the planet, galaxy or universe. They appeal to our desire to find a saviour of humankind and to see evil confronted and defeated.

It's no coincidence that most of these new film franchises are made in the West by the West and mainly for the West. This may be because there is a need to fill the vacuum created by a loss of belief in God with people who have God-like powers. In countries where people feel let down by their political leaders, in whom we have perhaps put too much faith, we feel the need to look elsewhere.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying the world of the imagination and the sheer awe-inspiring power that can be unleashed onto our screens and into our minds. But do we need to look to these unrealistic extremes for our superheroes? The ultimate saviour in whom we as Christians put our faith did indeed have miraculous powers to heal and to save. But God chose in Christ to join our human condition to become like us in order to save us through the powerlessness of sacrifice. Jesus death on the cross and his resurrection were the ultimate sign of the power of God’s love and forgiveness embodied in Jesus to set us free from sin and death.

We can also discover in the our neighbourhoods stories of people who through faith, love and patience serve and bless others in extraordinary ways. There are people who foster children, help asylum seekers, run food banks, visit those in debt, support charities; businesses, churches, mosques and gurdwaras who serve communities; teaching, caring, medical and rescue services going the extra mile for those entrusted to their care. Maybe one day some films will be made about them. Perhaps they already have been and are being screened daily in heaven!
