The Parish of Sandal Magna

News from Portobello

Many know that as a church we have a small charity that was set up with Portobello residents in 2005. Initially the main focus was Soul Portobello festivals and the running of Portobello Community Centre. We oversaw a major upgrade of the Centre in 2008 and secured the building with Trustees for the people of Portobello long term. Much work has happened over the years with a variety of people, projects and funding that has been a blessing to us all.

The past four years has seen Inspiring Community bring many good projects and training to people who live locally. They have been based in the Rainbow Hub which we also run as a WDH property in the centre of the estate.

Last week I had the privilege of going to Sheffield Cathedral to receive a Duke of York Community Initiative Award together with Pam Payling, Janet Gardiner and Mary Greenwood all who have been involved with the charity since it started. Along with 59 inspirational groups from around Yorkshire including Community Awareness Programme run by New Life Church in Wakefield we enjoyed a ceremony to honour so much unseen, sacrificial and joyful hard work that goes on.

With the help of Jo Jones, Ruth McCallum, the Trustees and friends of PCF we are writing a bid to WREN for a complete refurbishment of the Community Centre after ten years of wonderful use. I would like to thank Pam and Janet along with Sarah Cutts, Margaret Brown, Laura Truter and all the leaders of our groups for their tireless work and commitment to this area of our parish which we love.

Please pray for the next season in the life of this community and for a successful outcome to the bid. Many thanks.

Sally Martin.
